Stone veneer alone is not strong enough to hold back tons of soil and water so you must build a block retaining wall first following regulations in your local building code. The basic structure of a retaining wall begins with a footing that includes a drain system to carry water away from the wall and a weep hole every 6 to 8 feet to allow water to drain through the base of the wall. The wall should lean backward into the earth, 1 inch for every foot of wall height and be made of blocks or poured concrete with reinforced rebar. You should include space for drainage stone and filter fabric to prevent soil from clogging the stone's ability to drain efficiently.

Cultured Stone Panels
Cultured stone panels come in many styles, such as granite, marble, limestone, travertine, slate and onyx. Stone veneer panels come with a variety of finishes that include polished, honed, flamed, hammered and sandblasted. Panels weigh 80 percent less than natural stone and are less prone to damage from weather and seismic racking. Typical panels are z-shaped and installed in a zig-zag pattern along with filler panels, corners and trim pieces. Installing cultured stone panels greatly reduces cost, time and labor.

Ready the retaining wall by installing a moisture barrier and wire mesh to grip mortar and individual stones. Veneer panels come with installation instructions that may vary according to manufacturer. Arrange stones for each section of wall ahead of time. Then, apply a thick coat of mortar to the first section of wall. Press stones into the mortar. If the mortar starts to dry before you have finished the section, lightly mist with water and quickly finish the section. Fill low spots in the mortar between stones using a pastry, icing bag. Wash each section of wall with a sponge and water before moving on to the next section.
